Tooth implants are artificial teeth roots implanted into the jaw to hold bridges, dentures, and crowns. They have been around for several years, and researchers are studying ways to make the procedure even more effective every day. In this article, we will discuss the dental implant procedure in detail.

So, what is an implant in dentistry?

An implant is a prosthetic replacement for one or more missing teeth. Tooth implants are inserted into the jawbone, while dental bridges and dentures rely on support from the gum or other natural teeth.

How is the dental implant procedure done?

Initial consultation

Not everyone is immediately qualified for this surgical procedure, so you will need to find out if other procedures must be done beforehand. To get a clear understanding of what work needs to be completed, your dentist will do a complete examination that includes X-rays. After your dentist has examined you, they will go over a dental implant treatment plan with you designed to improve the appearance of your smile towards your desired goals.

Additional surgery

Understand that if you require extra dental implant surgery, for example a sinus lift or a bone graft, it can take up to 6 months before your jaw is ready to receive the initial dental implant. Consequently, any additional surgeries should always be conducted first. This gives your new bone sufficient time to recover before any implants are placed.

Dental implant placement

This process begins with an incision into the gum tissue to expose the jawbone beneath it. Next, a small hole is drilled into the bone where the tooth implant is placed. Once the dentist has securely implanted the bone, they will carefully stitch up the gums.

Osseointegration

After the implant is placed, the patient must wait 3-6 months for osseointegration to happen. The osseointegration process is key to dental implants and happens when the bone fuses with the titanium implant. This results in a very sturdy base for an implant crown, bridge or series of implants holding a denture.

Abutment placement

The next step in the dental implant process is another short chairside session. This time, the dentist reopens the gums and exposes the tooth implant. They attach a small connector piece called an abutment and close the gum tissue around it. The gum tissue is allowed to heal for two weeks.

Once the implant is successfully placed, the dentist will make an impression of the tooth in order to create a permanent crown. Depending on where the gap is in their smile, the patient may have to wear a temporary restoration for 3-6 weeks. The process is quick, usually taking less than 1 hour. The patient may need a local anaesthetic during this second recovery period.

Fitting the permanent crown

The process of installing a dental crown is simple. First, the temporary tooth is removed. The dental crown is then either screwed or cemented onto the implant and abutment. The dentist would have colour-matched the new tooth restoration to make it virtually indistinguishable from the rest of the teeth. When the permanent crown is finally attached, the patient can then begin to show off their new smile with pride.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

  • Improved dental health. Unlike a tooth-supported bridge, tooth implants placement does not require filing down the adjacent teeth. With implants, dentists leave more of your own teeth unaltered and intact, thus promoting long-term oral health. treatment process expect implants teeth burwood
  • Long-lasting. Implants are built to last for several years with the proper care and upkeep. In some cases, they may even last a lifetime.
  • Better self-esteem. Dental implants will make you feel proud to show off your smile again.
  • Easier eating. Dentures that slide around make chewing difficult, but dental implants function and look like your own teeth. This way, you can eat your favourite foods without worry or pain.
  • Greater comfort. Implants function as artificial replacements for natural teeth, and they’re much more comfortable than removable dentures because they act as though they’re part of your mouth.
  • Improved speech. Dental implants are a safer option than dentures because there is no worry that teeth might slip and cause you to mumble your words.
